가장 독창적인 전쟁사학자 중 한 사람으로 평가 받는, 영국의 역사가이다.
1934년에 태어났으며, 옥스포드 대학에서 공부했다. 1960년부터 26년 동안 영국 샌드허스트 왕립 육군사관학교에서 교수로 군사사를 강의했으며, 프린스턴 대학교의 연구교수이자 바사 대학교 역사학과 석좌교수를 지냈다. 1986년에 <데일리 텔리그라프> 국방부문 대기자가 되었으며, 2000년에는 기사 작위를 받았다.
그는 전통적인 전쟁사 서술을 뛰어넘어 군인 개개인의 경험, 전쟁의 역사적 연원, 기술 변화가 전쟁에 미치는 영향, 군 지휘관이 부딪히는 선택과 딜레마의 문제를 다루는 것으로 높은 평가를 받고 있다. 2차 세계대전을 종합적으로 다룬 수작으로 평가 받는 존 키건의 대표작 『2차 세계대전사』는 방대한 분량의 사료를 체계적으로 정리하여 사건의 흐름을 일목요연하게 드러냈을 뿐 아니라 탁월한 전투 묘사로 독자들에게 마치 전투가 벌어지는 현장에 와 있는 것 같은 생생한 현장감을 전해준다.
