유목민들에게 피해를 당한 서양인들의 자료를 통해 그들의 모습을 떠올릴 수밖에 없는 우리는 유목민들을 반인반마의 악마와 같은 존재로 생각했던 서양인들의 시각에 따른 이분법적 사고로 그들을 인식할 수밖에 없다. 이 책은 이런 역사왜곡에 대해 재조명할 필요가 있으며, 그에 따른 정당한 시각으로 유라시아 유목민들을 재평가하고 있다.
지은이는 기원전 5세기부터 1900년대 초까지 유라시아 대륙에서 살아갔던 유목민들을 시대별로 구분해 그들이 벌였던 전투를 중심으로 이야기를 펼쳐놓았다. 단순한 역사의 통사나 전투사가 아니라 유목민 한 민족이 유라시아 대륙을 떠나 서양으로 진출할 수밖에 없었던 자연 환경적 요인을 분석하고, 그들이 어떻게 어떤 경로를 통해 서양으로 진출했으며, 어떤 방식으로 전투를 벌여 나갔는지를 기술하였다.
